El dictamen. El desarrollo. La muchacha es entregada en matrimonio: ventura. Es propicia la perseverancia.

La imagen. Sobre la montaña, un árbol: la imagen del desarrollo paulatino. Así el noble se sostiene en la dignidad y en el mérito, y de ese modo mejora las costumbres.

Abajo la montaña (Gen), arriba el viento y la madera (Xun): un árbol creciendo en la ladera. La figura elige a propósito el crecimiento más lento que existe. Un árbol de montaña tarda décadas, se agarra a la piedra, aguanta el viento y por eso mismo no se cae. Nada en él es rápido y nada en él es frágil.

El nombre chino, Jian, es el avance por infiltración: el agua que se filtra en la tierra, la costumbre que se instala sin que nadie la anuncie. La tradición ilustra el hexagrama con el rito matrimonial completo, que en la China antigua tenía seis etapas obligatorias, cada una con su plazo y su ceremonia. Nadie se casaba de un día para el otro: la unión valía porque había recorrido todos los pasos en orden.

Las seis líneas usan una segunda imagen, el ganso salvaje que avanza posándose: la orilla, la roca, la meseta, el árbol, la cumbre y por fin el cielo abierto. El ganso migra en formación, vuelve todos los años al mismo lugar y elige una sola pareja de por vida. Por eso la Imagen habla de dignidad y de costumbres: lo que se construye despacio y se sostiene en el tiempo termina cambiando el modo en que vive la gente de alrededor.

The Judgment. Development. The maiden is given in marriage: good fortune. Perseverance is favourable.

The Image. A tree upon the mountain: the image of gradual Development. Thus the noble abides in dignity and worth, and in that way improves the customs.

The mountain below (Gen), wind and wood above (Xun): a tree growing on a slope. The figure deliberately chooses the slowest kind of growth there is. A mountain tree takes decades, grips the rock, endures the wind, and for that very reason does not fall. Nothing about it is fast and nothing about it is fragile.

The Chinese name, Jian, is advance by infiltration: water seeping into soil, a custom settling in without anyone announcing it. Tradition illustrates the hexagram with the full marriage rite, which in ancient China had six obligatory stages, each with its own waiting period and ceremony. Nobody married overnight: the union was worth something because it had gone through every step in order.

The six lines use a second image, the wild goose advancing by landing: the shore, the cliff, the plateau, the tree, the summit and at last the open sky. The goose migrates in formation, returns to the same place every year and chooses a single mate for life. That is why the Image speaks of dignity and of customs: what is built slowly and held over time ends up changing how the people around you live.

El error típico son dos apuros invertidos. Uno es saltear pasos: pedir el ascenso antes de haber hecho el trabajo, mudarse juntos a los dos meses, lanzar el producto sin probarlo, cobrar antes de entregar. El otro, más silencioso, es abandonar en el tramo aburrido: el 53 tiene un largo período intermedio donde no pasa nada visible, y ahí es donde la mayoría se baja convencida de que no funcionaba.

El tercer camino del 53 es avanzar de posada en posada: dar un paso, pisar firme, dejar que ese paso se vuelva piso, y recién entonces dar el siguiente. Es menos glamoroso que el salto y muchísimo más difícil de deshacer. La Imagen agrega la condición que suele olvidarse: sostenerte en la dignidad mientras dura. Cómo te comportás durante los años lentos es exactamente lo que después la gente llama tu prestigio. Y el Dictamen te avisa que el final llega: la sexta línea deja al ganso en el cielo abierto, con sus plumas usadas para la danza sagrada.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 53 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás construyendo algo que tarda años y querés saber si vale la pena seguir.
• Una relación avanza despacio y te preguntás si eso es falta de interés o solidez.
• Te ofrecen un atajo que saltea etapas y suena demasiado bien.
• Vas por el tramo aburrido, donde ya no hay novedad y todavía no hay resultado.

You drew 53 and you almost certainly wanted to know how long is left. The hexagram answers with an image before a number: a tree on a mountain. It will happen, it will take longer than you would like, and that delay is not an obstacle but the method.

This is the hexagram of the things that only work in stages: a career, a craft, a company, a relationship actually being built, a reputation, a physical recovery. In all of them speed accelerates nothing: it only brings forward the moment something breaks. The goose does not fly from the shore to the sky; it lands six times.

The typical mistake is two inverted forms of haste. One is skipping steps: asking for the promotion before doing the work, moving in together after two months, launching the product untested, charging before delivering. The other, quieter one, is quitting during the dull stretch: 53 has a long middle period where nothing visible happens, and that is where most people get off, convinced it was not working.

The third way of 53 is to advance from landing place to landing place: take a step, stand firmly on it, let that step become ground, and only then take the next one. It is less glamorous than a leap and far harder to undo. The Image adds the condition people forget: abiding in dignity while it lasts. How you behave during the slow years is exactly what people later call your standing. And the Judgment promises the end arrives: the sixth line leaves the goose in the open sky, its feathers used for the sacred dance. What you are building slowly today is the thing nobody will be able to take from you quickly.

In practice, hexagram 53 tends to come up when:

• You are building something that takes years and want to know whether to keep going.
• A relationship is advancing slowly and you wonder whether that is lack of interest or solidity.
• You are offered a shortcut that skips stages and sounds too good.
• You are in the dull stretch, where there is no novelty left and no result yet.

   El primer aterrizaje, todavía en el borde del agua. Estás empezando, sos el nuevo y no tenés respaldo: por eso la línea menciona el peligro y las habladurías. Van a hablar de vos, van a dudar de si estás a la altura y en parte tienen razón, porque recién llegaste. El texto igual dice que no hay culpa. Lo único que corresponde acá es quedarte, aprender rápido y no responder a los comentarios. Todos los que después vuelan alto empezaron en la orilla.

   The first landing, still at the edge of the water. You are starting out, you are the new one and you have no backing: that is why the line mentions danger and gossip. People will talk about you, they will doubt whether you are up to it, and they are partly right, because you have only just arrived. The text still says there is no fault. The only thing to do here is stay, learn fast and not answer the comments. Everyone who later flies high began at the shore.

   La segunda posada es firme y además es alegre. Conseguiste un lugar seguro y no estás solo: hay un equipo, una casa, una mesa. El detalle que la tradición subraya es que lo bueno se comparte. Esta línea sale mal solamente si te guardás la abundancia: comer y beber en concordia significa incluir a los que llegan detrás. En concreto: pasaste el período de prueba, ganás lo suficiente, la relación está estable. Disfrutalo sin culpa y sostené el ritmo, que el camino sigue.

   The second landing is solid and cheerful too. You found a safe place and you are not alone: there is a team, a home, a table. The detail tradition underlines is that the good is shared. This line only goes wrong if you hoard the abundance: eating and drinking in concord means including those arriving behind you. Concretely: you passed the trial period, you earn enough, the relationship is steady. Enjoy it without guilt and hold the rhythm, because the road continues.

   La meseta es tierra sin agua: el ganso se posó donde no le corresponde. Es la línea del avance fuera de lugar, del que se adelantó demasiado y quedó expuesto. Se rompe la pareja, el proyecto no da fruto, alguien se va y no vuelve. El consejo clásico es defensivo y sirve tal cual: no ataques, cuidá lo que ya tenés. En términos prácticos, si te salió la tercera, retrocedé al último punto firme y protegé el equipo, el vínculo o el dinero antes de intentar de nuevo.

   The plateau is land without water: the goose landed where it does not belong. This is the line of advance out of place, of going too far ahead and standing exposed. The couple breaks, the project bears no fruit, someone leaves and does not come back. The classical advice is defensive and works exactly as written: do not attack, protect what you already have. In practical terms, if you drew the third line, fall back to the last solid point and shield the team, the bond or the money before trying again.

   Un ganso tiene las patas palmeadas: no está hecho para posarse en ramas. Y sin embargo se acomoda, porque encuentra una que es lo bastante plana. Es la línea de la adaptación provisoria: un puesto que no era tu especialidad, una casa prestada, un arreglo raro que igual funciona. No es tu lugar definitivo y no hace falta que lo sea. Si te salió la cuarta, aceptá la incomodidad sin dramatizarla y buscá esa rama plana concreta: el detalle mínimo que vuelve habitable lo transitorio.

   A goose has webbed feet: it is not made to perch on branches. And yet it settles, because it finds one flat enough. This is the line of provisional adaptation: a post outside your specialty, a borrowed house, an odd arrangement that works anyway. It is not your final place and it does not need to be. If you drew the fourth line, accept the discomfort without dramatising it and look for that concrete flat branch: the small detail that makes the temporary liveable.

Tres años sin fruto es la manera clásica de nombrar una espera larga con malentendidos, envidias y desconfianza en el medio. El final del texto es rotundo: nada puede impedirlo. Si te salió la quinta, no reacciones a la distancia ni te expliques todo el tiempo. Seguí haciendo lo que hacés. La prueba de esta línea es de resistencia, no de talento, y ya la estás pasando.

   The summit is far off and isolated: you climbed high and for a while that separates you from your people. Three years without fruit is the classical way of naming a long wait with misunderstandings, envy and mistrust in the middle. The end of the text is emphatic: nothing can prevent it. If you drew the fifth line, do not react to the distance and do not keep explaining yourself. Keep doing what you do. The test of this line is endurance, not talent, and you are already passing it.

   La última línea es una de las más hermosas del libro. El ganso ya no se posa: vuela alto y sus plumas caídas se usan en la ceremonia. Es decir, lo que dejás atrás sirve de ejemplo para otros. Después de un camino largo, la obra deja de ser tuya y pasa a ser un modelo: el oficio que enseñás, la manera de trabajar que copian, la familia que armaste. No hay nada más que conquistar acá. Lo que corresponde es dejar huella limpia y soltar el resultado.

   The last line is one of the most beautiful in the book. The goose no longer lands: it flies high and its fallen feathers are used in the ceremony. That is, what you leave behind serves as an example for others. After a long road the work stops being yours and becomes a model: the craft you teach, the way of working that gets copied, the family you built. There is nothing left to conquer here. What remains is to leave a clean trace and let go of the outcome.
