La imagen. El fuego dentro del lago: la imagen de la revolución. Así el noble ordena el calendario y vuelve claras las estaciones.

El 49 junta los dos trigramas que no pueden convivir: abajo el fuego (Li) y arriba el lago (Dui). El agua apaga al fuego y el fuego evapora al agua. La tradición lo lee como dos hermanas bajo un mismo techo cuyas voluntades ya no coinciden: mientras sigan juntas, algo va a tener que cambiar de forma.

El nombre chino, Gé, es literalmente el cuero: la piel del animal raspada, curtida y convertida en otra cosa. De ahí la muda, el cambio de piel. No es un adorno nuevo encima de lo viejo; es la materia misma que se transforma y ya no vuelve atrás.

Por eso la Imagen manda ordenar el calendario. Cuando en China cambiaba la dinastía, lo primero que hacía el poder nuevo no era destruir: era fijar otra vez los meses, los solsticios y las fechas de siembra. Una revolución que no instala un tiempo nuevo es apenas un incendio. Y el Dictamen insiste en el día señalado: el cambio se cree y se sostiene recién cuando llega la fecha en que todos ven que era necesario.

The Judgment. Revolution. On the appointed day you are believed. Supreme success, furthered by perseverance. Remorse disappears.

The Image. Fire within the lake: the image of Revolution. Thus the noble orders the calendar and makes the seasons clear.

Hexagram 49 joins the two trigrams that cannot live together: fire below (Li) and the lake above (Dui). Water puts out fire and fire evaporates water. Tradition reads it as two sisters under one roof whose wills no longer agree: while they stay together, something will have to change its form.

The Chinese name, Gé, is literally hide: the animal skin scraped, tanned and turned into something else. Hence the moulting, the change of skin. It is not a new ornament on top of the old thing; it is the material itself transforming, with no way back.

That is why the Image orders the calendar to be set right. When a dynasty changed in China, the first act of the new power was not destruction: it was fixing the months, the solstices and the sowing dates again. A revolution that installs no new time is only a fire. And the Judgment insists on the appointed day: the change is believed and holds only when the date arrives on which everyone can see it was necessary.

La respuesta clásica tiene dos partes. La primera es el tiempo: en el día señalado se te cree. No alcanza con tener razón antes de tiempo; el 49 pide esperar el momento en que el cambio se vuelve evidente también para los demás, y recién ahí moverse. La segunda es la profundidad: si vas a cambiar de piel, cambiala entera y una sola vez. Media revolución deja lo peor de las dos épocas conviviendo.

El error típico es doble, y los dos extremos se parecen más de lo que parece. Uno es aguantar: seguir remendando un arreglo que ya se rompió, por lealtad, por costumbre o por miedo al vacío. El otro es quemar todo un martes a la noche, sin plan, sin fecha y sin avisarle a nadie, y llamar a eso valentía.

El tercer camino del 49 es el más incómodo de los tres: preparar la muda. Decir en voz alta, antes, que algo va a cambiar. Dar tiempo a que la gente alrededor lo procese. Fijar la fecha. Y cuando el día llega, no negociar el fondo. El cuero curtido no vuelve a ser cuero crudo: eso es exactamente lo que el hexagrama promete y también lo que cobra. Antes de moverte, preguntate una sola cosa: si esto cambia hoy, qué forma nueva queda mañana en su lugar. Si todavía no tenés esa respuesta, lo que falta no es coraje sino preparación.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 49 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás por renunciar, cortar una sociedad o terminar un vínculo que ya no se sostiene.
• Una empresa o una familia cambia sus reglas y tenés que decidir si acompañás o te vas.
• Venís avisando hace meses que algo no funciona y recién ahora te escuchan.
• Querés dejar un hábito de raíz en vez de reducirlo un poco.

You drew 49 and somewhere in your life there is something that no longer works: a job, an agreement, a way of speaking to yourself. The hexagram does not ask whether you want to change it. It assumes the change already began inside you and asks something else: how.

The classical answer has two halves. The first is timing: on the appointed day you are believed. Being right ahead of time is not enough; 49 asks you to wait for the moment when the change becomes obvious to everyone else too, and only then to move. The second is depth: if you are going to change skin, change all of it, and only once. Half a revolution leaves the worst of both eras living side by side.

The typical mistake is double, and the two extremes resemble each other more than they seem to. One is enduring: patching an arrangement that already broke, out of loyalty, habit or fear of the empty space. The other is burning everything down on a Tuesday night, with no plan, no date and nobody warned, and calling that courage.

The third way of 49 is the most uncomfortable of the three: preparing the moult. Saying out loud, beforehand, that something is going to change. Giving the people around you time to absorb it. Setting the date. And when the day comes, not negotiating the substance. Tanned hide never becomes raw hide again: that is exactly what the hexagram promises, and what it charges. Before you move, ask one question: if this changes today, what new form stands in its place tomorrow. If you still have no answer, what is missing is not courage but preparation.

In practice, hexagram 49 tends to come up when:

• You are about to resign, dissolve a partnership or end a bond that no longer holds.
• A company or a family changes its rules and you have to decide whether to follow or leave.
• You have been warning for months that something does not work and only now are you heard.
• You want to drop a habit at the root instead of trimming it a little.

   La primera línea te ata a propósito. Tenés la convicción, tenés el argumento, y no tenés ni la posición ni la prueba. Moverte ahora convierte una razón buena en un capricho ruidoso. En concreto: no mandes ese mail hoy, no anuncies la renuncia en la reunión de mañana, no publiques la carta abierta. Usá el tiempo para juntar hechos, aliados y un plan de qué pasa el día después. El cuero amarillo no es un castigo: es la correa que evita que arranques antes de tener con qué sostenerte.

   The first line ties you down on purpose. You have the conviction, you have the argument, and you have neither the position nor the proof. Moving now turns a good reason into a loud whim. Concretely: do not send that email today, do not announce your resignation in tomorrow morning meeting, do not publish the open letter. Use the time to gather facts, allies and a plan for the day after. The yellow hide is not a punishment: it is the strap that keeps you from bolting before you have anything to stand on.

   Cuando llega el día propio, se emprende la transformación. Iniciar trae fortuna y no hay culpa.When the day itself arrives, the transformation is undertaken. Setting out brings good fortune and no fault.

   Ahora sí. La segunda línea es la del momento maduro: las condiciones existen, la gente entiende y la espera empezó a costar más que el movimiento. Acá el 49 deja de pedir paciencia y pide acto. En la vida concreta: presentás la renuncia con fecha, mandás la propuesta de cambio por escrito, tenés la conversación que venías postergando. Hacelo completo y hacelo claro, no en insinuaciones. Lo que hoy sale limpio, dentro de tres semanas ya cuesta el doble de explicaciones.

   Now yes. The second line is the ripe moment: conditions exist, people understand, and waiting has started to cost more than moving. Here 49 stops asking for patience and asks for an act. In concrete life: you hand in your resignation with a date, you send the proposal for change in writing, you have the conversation you kept postponing. Do it completely and do it plainly, not in hints. What comes out clean today will cost twice the explaining three weeks from now.

   Lanzarse trae desgracia e insistir es peligroso; cuando el cambio se habló tres veces, se puede comprometer la palabra.Rushing out brings misfortune and insisting is dangerous; when the change has been discussed three times, one may give one word.

   Esta línea corrige a los dos impacientes: al que sale disparado y al que se aferra. El criterio es hermoso y muy práctico: que el asunto se haya hablado tres veces. Si lo dijiste una sola vez y ya querés ejecutar, todavía es tu idea, no una decisión compartida. Si lo dijiste diez veces y no hiciste nada, se volvió ruido de fondo. Tres conversaciones honestas, con las mismas palabras y con la gente que corresponde, alcanzan para que tu compromiso tenga peso.

   This line corrects both impatient types: the one who bolts and the one who clings. The criterion is beautiful and very practical: the matter must have been talked through three times. If you said it once and already want to execute, it is still your idea, not a shared decision. If you said it ten times and did nothing, it became background noise. Three honest conversations, in the same words and with the right people, are enough for your commitment to carry weight.

   Es la línea del cambio que sale bien porque estaba fundado. Nadie duda de tus motivos, entonces la transformación no gasta energía en defenderse. Fijate en el detalle: lo que vuelve legítimo al cambio no es el entusiasmo sino la confianza previa que te ganaste. Si estás acá, avanzá con el rediseño completo, no con un parche: cambiar el organigrama, la manera de repartir la plata, la forma de convivir. El arrepentimiento desaparece justamente porque ya no queda nada a medio hacer atrás tuyo.

   This is the line of the change that goes well because it was well founded. Nobody doubts your motives, so the transformation spends no energy defending itself. Notice the detail: what makes the change legitimate is not enthusiasm but the trust you earned beforehand. If you are here, go ahead with the full redesign, not a patch: the org chart, the way money is split, the way you live together. Remorse disappears precisely because nothing half done is left behind you.

   La muda del tigre es visible desde lejos: rayas nuevas, nítidas, sin faltas mezcladas. Es el cambio hecho con tanta claridad que no necesita justificarse. Acá no hay comunicado largo ni explicación defensiva: hacés lo que dijiste que ibas a hacer y el hecho habla. En lo cotidiano, esta línea aparece cuando alguien cambia de rumbo y todos, incluso los que perdían con eso, entienden por qué. Si te salió la quinta, no diluyas tu decisión buscando aprobación: la nitidez es la que convence.

   The tiger moult is visible from far away: new stripes, sharp, with no smudged patches. It is change made with such clarity that it needs no justification. There is no long statement here, no defensive explanation: you do what you said you would do and the fact speaks. In daily life this line shows up when someone changes course and everyone, even those who lose by it, understands why. If you drew the fifth line, do not dilute your decision hunting for approval: sharpness is what convinces.

   La revolución terminó y ahora empieza lo aburrido: sostenerla. La pantera cambia despacio, en dibujos finos, sin escándalo. El pequeño, en cambio, solo cambia el gesto: adopta el vocabulario nuevo y sigue haciendo exactamente lo de antes. Si te salió esta línea, cuidado con dos cosas. Una es exigirle a los demás una conversión total e inmediata. La otra es la tuya propia: fijate si cambiaste la estructura o apenas la manera de nombrarla. Consolidar, no seguir empujando, es lo que hoy trae fortuna.

   The revolution is over and now the boring part begins: holding it. The panther changes slowly, in fine markings, without scandal. The small one, by contrast, changes only the expression: adopting the new vocabulary and doing exactly what he did before. If you drew this line, watch two things. One is demanding a total, immediate conversion from everyone else. The other is your own: check whether you changed the structure or only the way you name it. Consolidating, not pushing further, is what brings good fortune now.
