El dictamen. El pozo. La ciudad puede mudarse; el pozo no se muda. No mengua ni aumenta. Van y vienen y sacan agua. Si alguien llega casi hasta el agua y la soga no alcanza, o si se rompe el cántaro, hay desgracia.

La imagen. El agua sobre la madera: la imagen del pozo. Así la persona noble alienta al pueblo en su trabajo y lo exhorta a ayudarse entre sí.

El 48 es madera abajo y agua arriba: el balde de madera que sube el agua desde el fondo, o la raíz que la lleva hacia lo alto. Es uno de los pocos hexagramas cuyo nombre no es un estado del ánimo ni una virtud, sino una obra pública. El pozo es la infraestructura más vieja que existe: alrededor de él se armaban las aldeas, y por él la gente que no se elegía entre sí tenía que cruzarse todos los días.

De ahí la frase central: la ciudad se muda, el pozo no. Las formas cambian —el gobierno, el idioma, la moda, los nombres— y abajo sigue habiendo la misma agua para todos. No mengua ni aumenta: la fuente no depende de cuánta gente saque, y por eso lo que da no se agota ni se puede acaparar.

Pero el Dictamen guarda la advertencia para el final, y es una advertencia de método. El agua puede estar y aun así no llegar: si la soga es corta, si el cántaro está roto, el pozo no sirve. Es la única desgracia que el hexagrama nombra, y no es de escasez sino de acceso. La Imagen cierra en la misma dirección: el pozo se usa entre todos, y la tarea del que lo cuida es alentar el trabajo común y que la gente se ayude alrededor de la fuente.

The Judgment. The Well. The town may be moved; the well is not moved. It neither decreases nor increases. People come and go and draw from it. If someone gets almost to the water and the rope does not reach, or the jug breaks, there is misfortune.

The Image. Water over wood: the image of the Well. Thus the noble person encourages the people in their work and urges them to help one another.

Hexagram 48 is wood below and water above: the wooden bucket lifting water from the depths, or the root carrying it upward. It is one of the few hexagrams whose name is neither a mood nor a virtue but a piece of public infrastructure. The well is the oldest one there is: villages formed around it, and through it people who had not chosen each other had to meet daily.

Hence the central line: the town moves, the well does not. Forms change — the government, the language, the fashion, the names — and underneath there is still the same water for everyone. It neither decreases nor increases: the source does not depend on how many draw from it, which is why what it gives cannot run out and cannot be hoarded.

But the Judgment saves its warning for the end, and it is a warning about method. The water can be there and still not arrive: if the rope is short, if the jug is broken, the well is useless. That is the only misfortune the hexagram names, and it is not about scarcity but about access. The Image closes in the same direction: a well is used in common, and the work of whoever tends it is to encourage shared labour and get people helping each other around the source.

El hexagrama confirma que el agua está. Y en la misma frase te señala el problema real: tener profundidad no sirve de nada si no hay soga que llegue hasta ella.

En la vida diaria aparece así. Sabés muchísimo de tu oficio y cobrás poco porque no sabés explicarlo. Sos la persona a la que todos consultan y nadie te contrata. Tenés un talento que usás a la mitad porque nunca lo ordenaste en algo que se pueda pedir. Estás en un trabajo que no toca ni el veinte por ciento de lo que podrías dar. Escribís, componés, cocinás, arreglás cosas, escuchás gente —y todo eso vive en un pozo tapado con una tabla, ahí, intacto.

El error típico con el 48 es cavar otro pozo. Como este no está dando agua, empezás una carrera nueva, un rubro nuevo, otro proyecto desde cero, y en el fondo el problema nunca fue la fuente: era la soga. El otro error es más silencioso y es la sensación crónica de que lo tuyo no alcanza —la de quien tiene profundidad real y la descuenta porque la tiene desde siempre—. El pozo no se admira a sí mismo; por eso hace falta que alguien de afuera te diga lo que hay abajo.

El tercer camino es concreto y bastante aburrido, que es su virtud: limpiá el pozo y conseguí la soga. Limpiar es sacar el barro acumulado —lo desactualizado, lo desordenado, lo que nunca terminaste de aprender bien—. La soga es todo lo que hace que otros puedan sacar: un precio, un nombre para lo que hacés, un lugar donde encontrarte, una manera de explicarlo en una frase. Y acordate del cántaro: no arruines la entrega en el último metro por un detalle roto, que es la única desgracia que este hexagrama nombra.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 48 suele aparecer cuando:

• Sabés hacer algo bien hace años y sentís que casi nadie lo aprovecha.
• Estás por empezar algo nuevo cuando en realidad lo que tenés está sin terminar de pulir.
• Te consultan todo el tiempo y no lográs convertirlo en trabajo.
• Cambió todo alrededor tuyo y buscás qué es lo que se mantiene.

You drew 48 and the question touches something deep in you: what you know how to do, what people come to you for, the capacity you have had for years and that does not wear out. The hexagram confirms the water is there. And in the same breath it points at the real problem: having depth is worth nothing if no rope reaches it.

In daily life it shows up like this. You know an enormous amount about your craft and charge little because you cannot explain it. You are the person everybody consults and nobody hires. You have a talent you use at half strength because you never organised it into something askable. You are in a job that touches maybe twenty per cent of what you could give. You write, compose, cook, fix things, listen to people — and all of it lives in a well covered with a plank, right there, intact.

The typical mistake with 48 is digging another well. Since this one is not yielding, you start a new career, a new field, another project from scratch, and underneath the problem was never the source: it was the rope. The other mistake is quieter, and it is the chronic sense that what you have is not enough — the feeling of someone with real depth who discounts it precisely because they have always had it. A well does not admire itself; that is why you need someone outside to tell you what is down there.

The third way is concrete and fairly boring, which is its virtue: clean the well and get the rope. Cleaning means removing the accumulated mud — what is outdated, what is disorganised, what you never quite finished learning properly. The rope is everything that lets others draw: a price, a name for what you do, a place to find you, a way to explain it in one sentence. And remember the jug: do not ruin the delivery in the last metre over one broken detail, which is the only misfortune this hexagram names.

In practice, hexagram 48 tends to come up when:

• You have known how to do something well for years and feel almost nobody makes use of it.
• You are about to start something new when what you already have is unfinished and unpolished.
• People consult you constantly and you cannot turn it into work.
• Everything around you has changed and you are looking for what stays.

   Del barro del pozo no se bebe. A un pozo viejo no vienen ni los animales.One does not drink the mud of the well. Not even animals come to an old well.

   La línea del abandono. Hay una capacidad tuya tan descuidada que ya no atrae a nadie: no la actualizaste, no la usás, y con el tiempo dejó de ser potable. No es una condena; es un diagnóstico. En lo concreto: si tenés un oficio, un título o un talento que hace años no tocás, no lo ofrezcas como está. Primero sacá el barro —estudiá de nuevo, practicá, hacé algo actual con eso— y recién después contale a alguien que existe.

   The line of neglect. There is a capacity of yours so uncared for that it no longer attracts anyone: you never updated it, you do not use it, and over time it stopped being drinkable. That is not a sentence; it is a diagnosis. Concretely: if you have a craft, a degree or a talent you have not touched in years, do not offer it as it stands. Take out the mud first — study again, practise, make something current with it — and only then tell anyone it exists.

   Tenés el agua y la estás usando para cualquier cosa menos para lo que sirve. Tirarles a los peces en el pozo es gastar una capacidad grande en objetivos chicos: usar tu mejor talento para tareas que resuelve cualquiera. Y el cántaro roto agrava: lo poco que subís se pierde en el camino. En lo concreto: fijate dónde se te escapa el trabajo —cobranzas que no hacés, proyectos que no cerrás, ideas que regalás— y arreglá esa fuga antes de sumar clientes.

   You have the water and you are using it for anything except what it is for. Shooting at fish in the well is spending a large capacity on small targets: using your best talent on tasks anyone could do. And the broken jug makes it worse: the little you raise is lost on the way up. Concretely: find where the work leaks out of you — invoices you never chase, projects you never close, ideas you give away — and fix that leak before adding clients.

   El pozo está limpio y nadie bebe de él. Ese es mi pesar, porque se podría sacar agua. Si el soberano tuviera claridad, la fortuna sería de todos.The well is cleaned and nobody drinks from it. That is my sorrow, for water could be drawn. If the ruler had clarity, the good fortune would be shared by all.

   La línea más triste y la más común entre gente capaz. Hiciste el trabajo, estás listo, lo tuyo funciona, y nadie viene. No es un problema de calidad: es de visibilidad y de quién decide. En lo concreto: alguien tiene que enterarse. Mostralo, contalo, buscá al que puede usar lo que hacés y ofrecéselo directo. Esperar a que descubran el pozo limpio puede llevar años, y el texto lo dice sin vueltas: es una pena que se pierda.

   The saddest line and the most common among capable people. You did the work, you are ready, your thing works, and nobody comes. It is not a quality problem: it is visibility, and it is about who decides. Concretely: somebody has to find out. Show it, tell it, find the person who could use what you do and offer it to them directly. Waiting for the clean well to be discovered can take years, and the text says it plainly: it is a shame to waste it.

4. LíneaLine 4 — Revestir el pozoLining the well

   Se está revistiendo el pozo. Ningún reproche.The well is being lined. No blame.

   Etapa de mantenimiento: no producís, reparás. Mientras se reviste el pozo nadie saca agua, y eso está bien. En lo concreto: es el mes que dedicás a ordenar la contabilidad, rehacer el sitio, estudiar, hacer terapia, arreglar el cuerpo. No esperes rendimiento durante ese tiempo ni te sientas improductivo. La línea es explícita en que no hay reproche: la pausa que refuerza la estructura es trabajo, aunque no se vea en el resultado del mes.

   A maintenance stage: you are not producing, you are repairing. While the well is being lined nobody draws water, and that is fine. Concretely: it is the month you spend sorting the accounts, rebuilding the site, studying, doing therapy, fixing your body. Do not expect output during that time and do not feel unproductive. The line is explicit that there is no fault: a pause that reinforces the structure is work, even when it does not show in the month's numbers.

5. LíneaLine 5 — La fuente fría y claraThe clear cold spring

   En el pozo hay una fuente fría y clara de la que se puede beber.In the well there is a clear, cold spring from which one can drink.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama: el agua es buena y está disponible. Notá lo que el texto no dice: no dice que alguien esté bebiendo. La calidad ya está resuelta; falta que se use. En lo concreto: lo que tenés listo está realmente bueno y no necesita más preparación. Sacalo hoy. Publicá, ofrecé, mandá la propuesta. La única manera de arruinar esta línea es seguir mejorando lo que ya alcanzó el punto.

   The best line of the hexagram: the water is good and available. Notice what the text does not say: it does not say anyone is drinking. Quality is already settled; what is missing is use. Concretely: what you have ready is genuinely good and needs no further preparation. Put it out today. Publish it, offer it, send the proposal. The one way to ruin this line is to keep improving what has already reached the point.

   Se saca del pozo sin estorbo. Es confiable. Fortuna elevada.One draws from the well without hindrance. It is dependable. High good fortune.

   El final del hexagrama y su mejor estado: el pozo está destapado y cualquiera puede sacar. Lo que te hace valioso acá no es la profundidad sino que sea accesible y constante. En lo concreto: tu conocimiento circula, tu casa está abierta, la gente sabe que puede contar con vos y eso vuelve multiplicado. La línea no advierte nada, y es de las pocas del libro que no lo hace. Lo único que se pide es no volver a tapar el pozo.

   The end of the hexagram and its best state: the well is uncovered and anyone can draw. What makes you valuable here is not the depth but that it is accessible and constant. Concretely: your knowledge circulates, your house is open, people know they can count on you, and that comes back multiplied. The line warns of nothing, which few lines in the book do. The only thing asked is that you never cover the well again.
