El dictamen. La familia. Es propicia la perseverancia de la mujer.

La imagen. El viento que sale del fuego: la imagen de la familia. Así el noble tiene sustancia en sus palabras y constancia en su conducta.

Abajo el fuego, arriba el viento. Es la imagen del hogar visto desde afuera: el fuego arde adentro y lo que sale de él, el calor, el humo, el aire que se mueve, es lo que el vecindario percibe. Lo de adentro se propaga hacia afuera sin que nadie lo anuncie.

El Dictamen menciona la perseverancia de la mujer porque en la estructura del hexagrama la segunda línea, blanda y central, ocupa el lugar interior, y la quinta, firme y central, el exterior. Cada uno en su sitio. La tradición leía ahí el orden del clan: no una jerarquía de valor sino un reparto de lugares que sostiene la casa. Traducido a hoy: la familia funciona cuando cada quien está donde efectivamente está y no en el lugar de otro.

Por eso la Imagen no prescribe reglas domésticas sino dos cosas personales: sustancia en las palabras y constancia en la conducta. Adentro de una casa nadie cree lo que se dice; se cree lo que se repite. Un padre que promete y no cumple enseña a desconfiar aunque tenga razón en todo lo demás. El clásico ubica la salud del grupo en la coherencia diaria de cada uno de sus miembros.

The Judgment. The Family. The perseverance of the woman furthers.

The Image. Wind coming forth from fire: the image of the Family. Thus the noble has substance in his words and constancy in his conduct.

Fire below, wind above. It is the picture of a household seen from outside: the fire burns inside and what comes out of it — the heat, the smoke, the moving air — is what the neighbourhood perceives. What happens inside spreads outward with nobody announcing it.

The Judgment mentions the perseverance of the woman because in the structure of the hexagram the second line, yielding and central, holds the inner place, and the fifth, firm and central, the outer one. Each in its own seat. Tradition read the order of the clan there: not a hierarchy of worth but a distribution of places that holds the house up. Translated to today: a family works when each person is where they actually are and not in somebody else's spot.

That is why the Image prescribes no domestic rules but two personal things: substance in your words and constancy in your conduct. Inside a home nobody believes what is said; they believe what is repeated. A father who promises and does not deliver teaches mistrust even if he is right about everything else. The classic locates the health of the group in the daily coherence of each of its members.

La clave está en la Imagen: en un vínculo cercano lo único que educa es lo que hacés todos los días. Los discursos, las cartas largas, las conversaciones definitivas: nada de eso mueve la aguja si al día siguiente todo vuelve a ser igual. El fuego adentro y el viento afuera describe algo muy concreto: lo que pasa en la intimidad se nota en todo lo demás, aunque no se hable.

El error típico del 37 es querer arreglar la casa desde el rol equivocado. El hijo que hace de padre de sus padres. La pareja que se vuelve terapeuta de la otra. El jefe que actúa de amigo cuando hace falta que decida, o de padre cuando hace falta que escuche. Cuando alguien ocupa un lugar que no le toca, el resto se desordena aunque las intenciones sean buenas. La línea 3 lo dice sin vueltas: el rigor de más trae arrepentimiento, y la falta total de límites termina en humillación.

El tercer camino que propone el 37 es doméstico y poco épico: definí tu lugar y sostenelo con constancia. Decí menos y cumplí más. Poné un límite chico y no lo muevas por una semana. Ordená lo tuyo antes de opinar sobre lo del otro. En una casa, la coherencia de una sola persona alcanza para cambiar el clima de todos.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 37 suele aparecer cuando:

• Hay tensión en tu casa y no sabés por dónde empezar.
• Estás ocupando en tu familia un rol que no te toca.
• Un equipo chico funciona como familia, con todo lo bueno y lo malo.
• Prometés cosas en casa y después no las sostenés.

You drew 37 and the question almost certainly touched a home: yours, the one you came from, the one you are building, or a small team that behaves like a family. The oracle answers that this is not solved by a grand gesture but by order and by a word that is kept.

The key is in the Image: in a close bond the only thing that teaches is what you do every day. Speeches, long letters, definitive conversations: none of it moves the needle if the next day everything is the same again. Fire inside and wind outside describes something very concrete: what happens in private shows up in everything else, even when it is never spoken.

The typical mistake with 37 is trying to fix the house from the wrong role. The child who parents their own parents. The partner who becomes the other one's therapist. The manager who plays friend when a decision is needed, or plays parent when listening is needed. When someone occupies a place that is not theirs, everything else falls out of order even if the intentions are good. Line 3 says it plainly: too much severity brings remorse, and a total absence of limits ends in humiliation.

The third way 37 proposes is domestic and unheroic: define your place and hold it with constancy. Say less and deliver more. Set one small limit and do not move it for a week. Put your own part in order before commenting on someone else's. In a home, the coherence of one single person is enough to change the climate for everyone.

In practice, hexagram 37 tends to come up when:

• There is tension at home and you do not know where to start.
• You are holding a role in your family that is not yours.
• A small team runs like a family, with all the good and the bad of it.
• You promise things at home and then do not keep them.

   La primera línea trabaja en el momento en que todavía no pasó nada: se ponen las reglas antes de que haya conflicto. Los horarios, quién hace qué, qué se habla y qué no. Suena rígido y es exactamente lo contrario: el límite claro al inicio evita el resentimiento después. En concreto es la conversación incómoda del primer mes de convivencia, del primer día del equipo, de la primera semana con un hijo adolescente. Más adelante cuesta el triple.

   The first line works at the moment when nothing has happened yet: the rules go up before there is any conflict. Schedules, who does what, what gets talked about and what does not. It sounds rigid and it is exactly the opposite: a clear limit at the start prevents resentment later. Concretely it is the awkward conversation in the first month of living together, on the team's first day, in the first week with a teenager. Later on it costs three times as much.

   La línea del centro interior y una de las más malinterpretadas del libro. No habla de someterse: habla de sostener lo que da de comer al grupo, en el sentido más amplio. La comida, la rutina, el clima de la casa, lo que hace que al día siguiente todos puedan funcionar. Es un trabajo invisible y decisivo. Si estás acá, el consejo es no despriorizarlo por un impulso: lo cotidiano que sostenés hoy es lo que va a sostenerte a vos.

   The line of the inner centre, and one of the most misread in the book. It is not about submission: it is about maintaining what feeds the group, in the widest sense. The food, the routine, the climate of the house, whatever makes it possible for everyone to function tomorrow. It is invisible work and it is decisive. If you are here, the advice is not to deprioritise it on an impulse: the daily thing you hold up today is what will hold you up later.

3. LíneaLine 3 — El rigor y la risaSeverity and laughter

When everything is unchecked joking, humiliation comes in the end.

   La línea más honesta del hexagrama porque no elige un bando. Pasarse de duro deja heridas y aun así ordena; no poner ningún límite es más simpático y termina peor. El clásico prefiere el error del rigor al error de la anarquía, pero no lo celebra. Si te salió esta línea, revisá para qué lado se te va la mano y corregí un poco, no del todo.    The most honest line of the hexagram, because it takes no side. Going too hard leaves wounds and still brings order; setting no limits at all is friendlier and ends worse. The classic prefers the error of severity to the error of anarchy, but it does not celebrate it. If you drew this line, check which way your hand slips and correct a little, not entirely. In a home, the middle point is not calculated: it is readjusted every week.

4. LíneaLine 4 — El tesoro de la casaThe treasure of the house

   Ella es el tesoro de la casa. Gran fortuna.She is the treasure of the house. Great good fortune.

   Alguien en el grupo lo enriquece a todos con su sola presencia. Puede administrar, puede cuidar, puede simplemente hacer que se esté bien. La línea le pone el nombre de tesoro porque su aporte no se mide en decisiones sino en clima. Si esa persona sos vos, la línea confirma que estás en tu lugar y que no hace falta que hagas más ruido. Si es otro, el consejo es evidente y casi nadie lo cumple: decíselo, y no esperes una ocasión especial.

   Someone in the group enriches everyone by simply being there. They might manage, they might care for people, they might just make it good to be around. The line calls them a treasure because their contribution is measured not in decisions but in climate. If that person is you, the line confirms you are in your place and there is no need to make more noise. If it is someone else, the advice is obvious and almost nobody follows it: tell them, and do not wait for a special occasion.

5. LíneaLine 5 — El rey se acerca a los suyosThe king approaches his own

   Como un rey, se acerca a su familia. No hay nada que temer. Fortuna.Like a king, he approaches his family. Nothing to fear. Good fortune.

   La autoridad que llega sin armadura. Esta línea describe al que tiene el poder de la casa y lo usa para acercarse, no para inspeccionar. No pide informes, no controla, no llega preguntando qué salió mal. Y por eso lo escuchan. En la práctica es el padre que entra y se sienta, el jefe que pregunta cómo va y aguanta la respuesta, la persona que deja de vigilar el vínculo y confía. Es la mejor línea del 37 y también la más adulta.

   Authority that arrives without armour. This line describes the one who holds the power of the house and uses it to draw near, not to inspect. No reports demanded, no monitoring, no walking in asking what went wrong. And that is why they get listened to. In practice it is the parent who comes in and sits down, the boss who asks how it is going and stays for the answer, the person who stops policing the relationship and trusts. It is the best line of 37 and also the most grown-up.

   La última línea cierra con la única autoridad que dura en una familia: la que se ganó sin pedirla. No es el que grita más ni el que más plata pone; es el que sostuvo tanto tiempo lo mismo que ya no hace falta discutirlo. Si te salió esta línea, la respuesta es que tu tarea es larga y silenciosa: seguí siendo consistente y el respeto va a llegar solo. Si esperabas un reconocimiento inmediato, todavía no es el momento.

   The last line closes with the only authority that lasts in a family: the kind earned without asking for it. It is not whoever shouts loudest or puts in the most money; it is whoever held the same thing so long that it no longer needs arguing about. If you drew this line, the answer is that your task is long and quiet: stay consistent and the respect will come by itself. If you were expecting immediate acknowledgement, the moment has not arrived.
