El dictamen. La gracia tiene éxito. En asuntos pequeños es propicio emprender algo.

La imagen. El fuego al pie de la montaña: la imagen de la gracia. Así el noble ordena los asuntos corrientes, pero no se atreve a decidir de ese modo las cuestiones graves.

En el 22 el fuego arde al pie de la montaña y su luz sube por la ladera. Alcanza a iluminar la piedra cercana, los árboles de abajo, el camino que se recorre esta noche; no ilumina la cumbre ni el valle entero. Esa es exactamente la potencia de la forma: embellece lo que está cerca y no modifica la estructura de la montaña.

El nombre, Bì, alude al adorno, a lo pintado, a lo que se pone encima. La tradición china no lo desprecia en absoluto: la cortesía, el vestido correcto, la ceremonia y el buen decir son la manera civilizada de tratarse entre personas. Lo que hace el hexagrama es ponerle escala. Por eso el Dictamen promete éxito y aclara que conviene emprender sólo en asuntos pequeños.

La Imagen es todavía más precisa: con luz de fuego se ordenan los asuntos corrientes y no se juzgan las causas graves. Una decisión de fondo no se toma por cómo se ve ni por quién la presenta mejor. La forma acompaña; no decide. Y el hexagrama guarda su última palabra para la línea 6, donde la gracia más alta resulta ser la que ya no tiene color.

The Judgment. Grace succeeds. In small matters it is favourable to undertake something.

The Image. Fire at the foot of the mountain: the image of Grace. Thus the noble puts everyday affairs in order, but does not dare decide grave questions that way.

In 22 fire burns at the foot of the mountain and its light climbs the slope. It reaches the nearby rock, the trees below, the path you walk tonight; it does not light the summit or the whole valley. That is exactly the power of form: it beautifies what is near and does not alter the structure of the mountain.

The name, Bì, refers to ornament, to what is painted, to what is laid on top. Chinese tradition does not despise it at all: courtesy, correct dress, ceremony and good speech are the civilised way people treat one another. What the hexagram does is give it scale. That is why the Judgment promises success and specifies that it is favourable to undertake only in small matters.

The Image is more precise still: by firelight everyday affairs are put in order and grave cases are not judged. A decision of substance is not made on how it looks or on who presents it best. Form accompanies; it does not decide. And the hexagram keeps its last word for line 6, where the highest grace turns out to be the one with no colour left.

En lo concreto el 22 aparece en la marca que rehace el logo mientras el producto sigue igual, en la pareja que sale bien en las fotos y no se habla en la cocina, en el informe hermoso que no dice nada, en la casa impecable de la persona que no duerme. También aparece en su versión buena: el que se viste con respeto para una ocasión importante, el que corrige la ortografía del mensaje difícil, el que pone un mantel porque hoy viene alguien que quiere.

El error típico es confundir el adorno con la sustancia, y el error inverso es despreciar la forma como si fuera una mentira. Los dos se equivocan por la misma razón: creen que hay que elegir entre las dos cosas.

El tercer camino lo propone la última línea, la gracia simple: cuidá la forma porque es una manera de respetar, y dejala lo bastante sencilla como para que no mienta. Con eso alcanza para lo cotidiano. Para lo grave, apagá la escena y mirá los números, los hechos y el trato real.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 22 suele aparecer cuando:

You drew 22 and the question probably had to do with a presentation, an image, a way of putting things. The answer is yes, form matters, and form alone is not enough.

The hexagram authorises you to care about the detail and forbids you to use it to cover the substance. Fire at the foot of the mountain lights the path, it does not move the mountain. If your project is good, good presentation puts it in view and that is a real success. If the project is weak, presentation only gets more people to see the problem, slightly later.

Concretely, 22 shows up in the brand that redoes its logo while the product stays the same, in the couple who photograph beautifully and do not talk in the kitchen, in the gorgeous report that says nothing, in the immaculate house of a person who does not sleep. It also shows up in its good version: the one who dresses with respect for an important occasion, who fixes the spelling of the difficult message, who lays a tablecloth because someone loved is coming today.

The typical mistake is confusing ornament with substance, and the opposite mistake is despising form as if it were a lie. Both are wrong for the same reason: they think you have to choose between the two.

The third way is proposed by the last line, simple grace: care for the form because it is a way of showing respect, and keep it plain enough that it does not lie. That is enough for everyday matters. For grave ones, turn the staging off and look at the numbers, the facts and how people are actually treated.

In practice, hexagram 22 tends to come up when:

• When you have to decide something important and how it looks is influencing you.
• When an occasion calls for care with the detail and the gesture.

   Al principio la elegancia consiste en renunciar a la comodidad que todavía no te corresponde. Bajarse del carruaje y caminar es no aceptar el privilegio prestado: no usar el título que no tenés, no cobrar el precio que todavía no sostenés, no llegar en un auto ajeno. Caminar despacio hasta el lugar es más digno que llegar rápido en algo que no es tuyo. Si estás empezando, esta línea te dice que la modestia acá es la mejor presentación.

   At the start, elegance means giving up the comfort that is not yours yet. Getting down from the carriage and walking is refusing borrowed privilege: not using the title you do not hold, not charging the price you cannot yet back, not arriving in a car that belongs to someone else. Walking slowly to the place is more dignified than arriving fast in something that is not yours. If you are beginning, this line says modesty is the best presentation here.

2. LíneaLine 2 — Adornar la barbaAdorning the beard

   Adorna la barba de su mentón.He adorns the beard on his chin.

   La barba se mueve cuando se mueve el mentón: el adorno no tiene vida propia. La línea avisa contra la forma que sólo sigue a otro. Es el que copia el estilo de una marca que admira, el que arma su discurso con las palabras del jefe, el que se viste como el grupo para pertenecer. No está mal acompañar, pero no lo confundas: si abajo no hay nada tuyo, el adorno no te da existencia. Primero el mentón, después la barba.

   The beard moves when the chin moves: the ornament has no life of its own. The line warns against form that merely follows something else. It is the person who copies the style of an admired brand, who builds his speech out of the boss vocabulary, who dresses like the group in order to belong. There is nothing wrong with going along, but do not confuse it: if there is nothing of yours underneath, the ornament does not grant you existence. Chin first, beard after.

   Con gracia y lustre. La perseverancia constante trae fortuna.Graceful and glistening. Constant perseverance brings good fortune.

   Todo brilla: el momento es agradable, hay reconocimiento, hay buen clima. La línea no te pide que lo cortes, te pide que no te duermas ahí. El brillo es placentero y también ablanda. Es la etapa en que un negocio anda bien y se deja de vender, en que una pareja está linda y se deja de conversar. Perseverar acá quiere decir seguir haciendo exactamente lo que te trajo hasta este punto, aunque hoy no parezca necesario.

   Everything shines: the moment is pleasant, there is recognition, the weather is fine. The line does not ask you to cut it short, it asks you not to fall asleep in it. Shine is pleasurable and it also softens. It is the stage where a business is doing well and people stop selling, where a couple looks lovely and stops talking. Persevering here means going on doing exactly what brought you to this point, even though today it does not look necessary.

   Adorno o sencillez. Un caballo blanco llega como con alas. No es un asaltante: viene a pedir la mano en el momento justo.Ornament or simplicity. A white horse comes as if on wings. He is no robber: he comes to woo at the right time.

   Estás en el momento de elegir entre la escena y la verdad, y aparece alguien o algo blanco, sin adornos, que al principio te asusta. La línea aclara que no viene a robarte nada. Es la propuesta simple y directa que llega cuando esperabas algo más elaborado: un trabajo sin lujos pero honesto, una persona sin discurso pero presente. Dudás por costumbre. La línea dice que esa sencillez que llega volando es la buena, y que llega en el momento justo.

   You are at the point of choosing between the staging and the truth, and someone or something white arrives, unadorned, and at first it frightens you. The line makes clear it has come to rob you of nothing. It is the simple, direct offer that arrives when you were expecting something more elaborate: a job with no glamour but honest, a person with no speech but present. You hesitate out of habit. The line says that simplicity arriving on wings is the good one, and that it arrives exactly on time.

   Gracia en las colinas y los jardines. El rollo de seda es escaso y pequeño. Humillación, y al final fortuna.Grace in the hills and gardens. The roll of silk is meagre and small. Humiliation, and good fortune in the end.

   Te retiraste de la escena grande a un lugar más sencillo y el regalo que podés ofrecer es modesto. Te da vergüenza: la seda es poca. La línea promete fortuna al final, porque lo que se recibe no es la seda sino la intención. Es el que invita a comer a su casa en vez de a un restaurante, el que manda unas líneas escritas a mano en vez de un regalo caro. Ofrecé lo que tenés y no te disculpes por el tamaño.

   You withdrew from the big stage to a simpler place and the gift you can offer is modest. It embarrasses you: the silk is meagre. The line promises good fortune in the end, because what is received is not the silk but the intention. It is the person who invites you home instead of to a restaurant, who sends a few handwritten lines instead of an expensive present. Offer what you have and do not apologise for the size of it.

   Gracia blanca, sin color. Ninguna falta.White grace, without colour. No blame.

   El final del hexagrama es la forma que ya no necesita adorno. Blanco: nada agregado, nada que corregir. Es el escrito sin adjetivos, la casa sin decoración de más, la persona que dejó de actuar un personaje. Llegar acá no es dejar de cuidar la forma, es haberla depurado tanto que sólo quedó lo necesario, y eso es lo más elegante que existe. Si te salió esta línea, el trabajo de hoy es sacar cosas en vez de agregarlas.

   The end of the hexagram is form that no longer needs ornament. White: nothing added, nothing to correct. It is the piece of writing with no adjectives, the house with no surplus decoration, the person who stopped playing a character. Arriving here is not giving up on form, it is having refined it until only the necessary remained, and that is the most elegant thing there is. If you drew this line, the work today is removing things instead of adding them.
