El dictamen. Comunidad con los hombres a campo abierto. Éxito. Es propicio cruzar las grandes aguas. Es propicia la perseverancia del noble.

La imagen. El cielo junto con el fuego: la imagen de la comunidad. Así el noble ordena los clanes y distingue con claridad las cosas.

Abajo el Fuego, que sube; arriba el Cielo, que también sube. Los dos trigramas van en la misma dirección, y eso es exactamente lo que hace una comunidad: no gente igual, sino gente que mira para el mismo lado. La única línea de yin está en el segundo lugar y todas las demás se relacionan con ella; el peligro está justo ahí, en que alguien quiera quedársela para su grupo.

El dictamen dice literalmente "a campo abierto": 于野, afuera de las murallas de la aldea, en la tierra que no pertenece a ningún clan. Es una precisión política. En la China antigua uno se unía por sangre, por apellido, por pueblo. Que el clásico recomiende juntarse en el campo abierto significa unirse por una causa y no por pertenencia, con gente que no es de los tuyos.

Por eso la Imagen manda ordenar los clanes y distinguir las cosas. Parece lo contrario de la unión, y no lo es: la comunidad que dura no borra las diferencias, las nombra. Saber quién es quién, quién hace qué y qué no tenemos en común es lo que permite estar de acuerdo en lo que importa. Y por eso también es propicio cruzar las grandes aguas: juntos se puede hacer algo que solo no se podría.

The Judgment. Fellowship with people in the open field. Success. It is favourable to cross the great water. The perseverance of the noble is favourable.

The Image. Heaven together with fire: the image of Fellowship. Thus the noble sorts the clans and tells things clearly apart.

Below, Fire, which rises; above, Heaven, which also rises. Both trigrams go the same way, and that is exactly what a community is: not people who are alike, but people facing the same direction. The single yin line sits in the second place and all the others relate to it; the danger is precisely there, in someone wanting to keep it for their own group.

The Judgment says literally "in the open field": 于野, outside the village walls, on ground that belongs to no clan. That is a political detail. In ancient China you joined by blood, by surname, by town. For the classic to recommend gathering in the open field means uniting around a cause and not around belonging, with people who are not your own.

That is why the Image commands sorting the clans and telling things apart. It looks like the opposite of union, and it is not: the fellowship that lasts does not erase differences, it names them. Knowing who is who, who does what and what we do not have in common is what allows agreement on what matters. And that is also why it is favourable to cross the great water: together you can do something you could not do alone.

En lo concreto: si estás armando una sociedad, escriban el objetivo y el reparto antes de la primera factura. Si entrás a un grupo nuevo, no te apures a tomar partido en la interna que ya venía. Si el equipo está trabado, la salida casi nunca es más confianza y casi siempre es más claridad: quién decide qué, quién hace qué, qué esperamos de cada uno. Y si te invitan a un espacio donde el precio de entrar es dejar de pensar distinto, ese no es tu lugar.

El error típico del 13 es el clan, y lo dice la línea 2 sin vueltas: unirte solo con los tuyos es humillante a la larga, porque termina siendo un pacto para no crecer. El otro error, más moderno, es la comunidad de nadie: mucha gente en un grupo enorme, todos de acuerdo en general, nadie comprometido en particular. El tercer camino que propone el hexagrama es el campo abierto: un grupo con propósito declarado, con diferencias nombradas y con la puerta sin llave. Cuesta más armarlo. Después cruza ríos.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 13 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás armando una sociedad, un equipo o un grupo y todavía no está claro para qué.
• Entrás a un ambiente nuevo donde ya hay bandos formados.
• Un grupo tuyo se cerró sobre sí mismo y empezó a definirse por lo que rechaza.
• Tenés que hacer algo grande y solo no llegás.

You drew 13 and the question has to do with people: a team, a partnership, a group of friends, a family, a community you are building or want to join. The answer is favourable and it comes with a very clear condition: the union works if it is open and explicit, and it rots if it is a closed club.

The oracle is telling you that what genuinely unites is not affinity but a purpose said out loud. Groups held together by shared taste, common history or dislike of a third party dissolve as soon as the weather changes. Groups held together by a declared reason can carry very different people inside.

Concretely: if you are forming a partnership, write down the goal and the split before the first invoice. If you are joining a new group, do not rush to take sides in the feud that was already running. If the team is stuck, the way out is almost never more trust and almost always more clarity: who decides what, who does what, what we expect from each other. And if you are invited into a space where the price of entry is to stop thinking differently, that is not your place.

The typical mistake of 13 is the clan, and line 2 says it bluntly: joining only with your own is humiliating in the long run, because it ends up being a pact not to grow. The other mistake, more modern, is the fellowship of nobody: a lot of people in a huge group, everyone broadly agreeing, nobody committed in particular. The third way this hexagram proposes is the open field: a group with a declared purpose, with differences named and the door unlocked. It takes more work to build. Afterwards it crosses rivers.

In practice, hexagram 13 tends to come up when:

• You are forming a partnership, a team or a group and it is still unclear what it is for.
• You are entering a new environment where sides have already formed.
• A group of yours closed in on itself and started defining itself by what it rejects.
• You have something big to do and you cannot get there alone.

Al principio hay que juntarse en la puerta, a la vista de todos, sin conversaciones privadas ni acuerdos por debajo. En lo concreto: presentate al grupo entero antes de hacerte amigo de una facción, hablá de tus intenciones de frente, no negocies en pasillos. Lo que se arma a la luz aguanta después las tormentas.

   The bond is just beginning and stands at the threshold: nobody has taken sides yet and no alliances have formed. The line says that is right. At the start you gather at the gate, in plain view, with no private conversations and no deals underneath. Concretely: introduce yourself to the whole group before befriending one faction, say your intentions openly, do not negotiate in corridors. What is built in the light survives the storms later.

   La única línea desfavorable del hexagrama, y es la que más nos toca. Unirse con los propios es cómodo, cálido y a la larga humillante: el grupo se vuelve un espejo y deja de crecer. Es la mesa donde siempre están los mismos, la empresa que solo contrata conocidos, el círculo que confunde lealtad con complicidad. Si te salió esta línea, la pregunta es a quién estás dejando afuera y por qué motivo, si sos honesto, no es el mérito.

   The only unfavourable line of the hexagram, and the one that hits closest to home. Joining only with your own is comfortable, warm and in the long run humiliating: the group becomes a mirror and stops growing. It is the table with always the same people, the company that hires only acquaintances, the circle that confuses loyalty with complicity. If you drew this line, the question is who you are leaving out, and why, if you are honest, the reason is not merit.

   Desconfianza armada. Alguien sospecha del otro, se prepara para el choque, vigila, guarda pruebas, arma su versión. Y así se le van tres años. La línea no dice quién tenía razón: dice que la desconfianza sostenida paraliza a los dos. En lo concreto es el socio que guarda capturas de pantalla, la pareja que revisa el teléfono, el compañero que documenta cada error del otro por si algún día hace falta. Nadie ataca y nadie avanza.

   Armed distrust. Someone suspects the other, prepares for the clash, watches, saves evidence, builds their version. And three years go by like that. The line does not say who was right: it says that sustained distrust paralyses both. Concretely it is the partner who saves screenshots, the spouse who checks the phone, the colleague who documents every mistake of the other in case it is needed one day. Nobody attacks and nobody moves.

   Estaba todo listo para la pelea y algo lo frena: se sube al muro, mira, y baja. La fortuna de la línea no está en la fuerza sino en la reconsideración. En lo concreto: escribiste el mensaje entero y no lo mandaste; ibas a la reunión a poner las cosas en su lugar y elegiste escuchar primero; estabas por cortar y preguntaste antes. Retroceder cuando ya estabas arriba del muro no es cobardía. Es la única manera de que el conflicto no se coma el vínculo.

   Everything was set for the fight and something stops him: he climbs the wall, looks, and comes down. The good fortune of this line is not in strength but in reconsidering. Concretely: you wrote the whole message and did not send it; you were going into the meeting to set things straight and chose to listen first; you were about to cut ties and asked a question instead. Backing off when you were already on top of the wall is not cowardice. It is the only way the conflict does not eat the relationship.

En lo concreto: la reconciliación que llevó meses, el equipo que se rearmó después de una crisis fea, la conversación que empezó con llanto y terminó con los dos aliviados. Aguantá el tramo feo.

   Two people who belong together are separated by circumstances, third parties or misunderstandings, and it costs them enormously to reach each other. The line is famous because it describes something everyone lives: the union that hurts first. What matters is the ending, not the noise in the middle. Concretely: the reconciliation that took months, the team rebuilt after an ugly crisis, the conversation that began in tears and ended with both of you relieved. Sit through the bad stretch.

   La unión más lejana: gente que se junta afuera, sin intimidad y sin proyecto común, más por circunstancia que por elección. La línea no la condena, dice que no hay de qué arrepentirse. Hay vínculos que son eso y está bien: los vecinos, los del gimnasio, los del grupo del colegio de los chicos. Si estás acá, no le pidas a esa gente lo que no puede darte, y tampoco te vayas: la pradera también es un lugar donde estar con otros.

   The most distant union: people who gather outside, with no intimacy and no shared project, more by circumstance than by choice. The line does not condemn it, it says there is nothing to regret. Some bonds are exactly that and it is fine: the neighbours, the people at the gym, the parents from your kids school. If you are here, do not ask those people for what they cannot give, and do not walk away either: the meadow is also a place to be with others.
